Omni Apps is pleased to introduce capture, an AI agent skill designed to streamline how you save information. This skill offers a unified command-line interface for capturing thoughts, notes, and various content directly into your brain database and as local markdown files. Its purpose is to consolidate several distinct ingestion workflows into a single, efficient entry point, making it easier for developers and anyone managing information to log details without friction. The primary benefit is efficiency. Instead of navigating multiple tools or manual steps, you get one interface for common data capture needs. This approach minimizes context switching and allows you to focus on the content itself. The skill ensures your data is consistently formatted, stored, and readily accessible for future reference, whether you prefer querying a database or browsing local files.

Streamlined Content IngestionThe gbrain capture command provides a robust mechanism for content ingestion, designed for flexibility and ease of use. It accepts content through three main methods to fit various scenarios. First, you can provide content directly as an inline argument, suitable for short thoughts or quick notes. For example, gbrain capture "My latest idea on project X relates to data pipelining with async functions.". This method is straightforward for immediate input.Second, for content stored in existing files, the --file PATH option allows you to specify a file path, ingesting its entire content. This is useful for saving code snippets, drafts, or longer notes that are already in a text file. Third, the --stdin option enables piping content from other command-line tools, integrating reliably into existing shell workflows. You could, for instance, pipe the output of a script or a log file directly into the tool using a command like cat /var/log/myapp.log | gbrain capture --stdin. This flexibility means you have a single, adaptable entry point for diverse content types, replacing more fragmented methods of saving data.It is important to note that while inline arguments are convenient, using them for sensitive data carries a shell-history risk and should be avoided.

Automatic

Organization and MetadataOne of the core strengths of this skill is its ability to automatically structure and enrich your captured content. When you save something, the tool generates a stable slug for the markdown file, following the format inbox/YYYY-MM-DD-<hash8>. This ensures predictable file locations and avoids naming conflicts, making your local knowledge base consistent and easy to navigate.Beyond file naming, the skill automatically adds essential frontmatter to each markdown file. This includes type, title, and timestamps, providing immediate context and making the content searchable and filterable within your database or file system. The skill operates with sensible defaults to further simplify usage. It employs content-hash deduplication, preventing redundant entries and keeping your knowledge base clean. The default type assigned to new captures is 'note'. For convenience, it can auto-generate a title from the first line of your content, capping it at 80 characters for conciseness. Additionally, each entry is automatically stamped with captured_via and captured_at metadata, providing valuable traceability. After each capture, the skill provides a clear receipt, printing the file location and status to your console, confirming that your content has been successfully saved.

Adapting to Your

Workflow and LimitationsThe skill offers various output options to integrate with different automated workflows. By default, it prints a standard 5-line receipt containing key information about the saved content. For scripting or chaining commands, the --quiet option can be used to output only the file slug, allowing for further processing. For more structured programmatic use, the --json option provides a machine-readable output format. This capability also streamlines integration with natural language triggers such as 'capture this', 'save this thought', 'remember this', or 'drop this in the inbox'. These triggers allow for natural language interaction with the skill through your AI agent, making the act of saving information even more intuitive. While powerful for its intended use, the skill also defines clear boundaries for its application. It is not designed for bulk file imports; for that, you should use the sync utility. Similarly, it is not optimized for extracting rich article metadata, a task better handled by idea-ingest. For detailed meeting transcripts, meeting-ingestion is the appropriate tool. Lastly, as mentioned previously, it is critical to avoid using inline arguments for sensitive data to prevent exposure via shell history.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQ1:

What type of content is this skill best suited for?A1: It excels at saving thoughts, quick notes, and general content snippets efficiently.Q2: How does this skill prevent duplicate entries?A2: It uses content-hash deduplication to ensure that identical content is not saved multiple times.Q3: Can I get a machine-readable output from the skill?A3: Yes, the --json option provides structured output, while --quiet will output only the file slug. The skill offers a single, robust entry point for your daily knowledge ingestion needs. It simplifies the process of getting information into your system, ready for recall.
